While riding the subway from Queens to Coney Island on vacation in NYC 2017, drummer Jim Moran had the idea for this 80’s band. Playing in local cover bands with lead guitarist Scott Grocott, Jim shared the idea with Scott. We started planning and around that time Scott added a guitar synthesizer to his rig. We met lead singer David Vail who blew us away and we began rehearsing with our bass player friend Bob Erwin. Along the way we decided to add another lead guitar when we met Keith Powers. Keith fit in instantly. He was even in an 80’s band in the 80’s!! Not long after Bob moved on and we met our permanent bass player Paul Choboter. Paul brings super solid bass playing with great backup vocals that blend and harmonize well with David’s leads.
The band name comes from an SF 80’s dance club, “Club Dv8”. After a couple variations (DV8D, DV8) we realized the name for this band should be “Club Dv8” – Our mission, make it a dance party every time, everywhere we play! Our sets are high energy 80’s music we all know and love!
David Vail
Vocals, tambourine, cowbell
Dave's not here.
No, seriously, Dave is the tall guy with the powerful vocals. He can sing Michael Jackson! He can sing Prince! He can do that super high part on "Take On Me". What can't he do? He can't remember to write his own bio, so the bass player has to make something up.
Jim Moran
Drums, ref whistle, bubble op
Growing up a music fan in the east bay, Jim started playing drums in 7th grade and by 8th grade had a band that rocked their 8th grade 84' grad party. In High School he played out in a punk rock band in the bay area including the all-ages 924 Gilman St in Berkeley. From there he played with his two best buds for many years in Castro Valley before transplanting to SLO County. Jim loves playing in solid bands with good people while making the dance floor move!
Scott Grocott
Guitar/Synth
A veteran of the San Luis Obispo county music scene, Scott brings a bit of the 80's synth flavor to Club Dv8's set list. Scott's influences are Alex Lifeson, Pat Travers, Michael Schenker and Edward Van Halen. Scott also likes to play with toy cars.
Keith Powers
Guitar/vocals
Keith started playing guitar at 12 years old on a Montgomery Wards acoustic guitar; not long after that, he graduated to an electric guitar and joined the Dufur High School jazz band. Since then, Keith has been in many working bands, including an 80's band in the 80's. Keith is enjoying getting the party grooving with Club Dv8 and watching the bubbles pop! Rock On!
Paul Choboter
Bass/vocals
Paul really, really loves music. He grew up in a musical family, playing piano, guitar, and violin, and singing in choirs. He picked up his first bass when he was 9 years old, and has barely put it down since. Paul currently plays bass and sings backing vocals in Club Dv8 as well as one or two other awesome Central Coast bands. In his spare time, he teaches math at Cal Poly.
